Album review - Jesci - "Vintage Soul" Texas is more than just country twang. And most music fans might already be aware of this. Jesci (like Jewel and Madonna, he only uses his first name) is just the type of artist that is contributing to this movement with a brand of pop-rock that can appeal to just about anybody. His new EP, Vintage Soul, is slated for a May release whether or not he finds the support of a record label. It will be surprising if labels aren’t vying for the chance to represent him, though, given the popularity of Matchbox 20, the Goo Goo Dolls and Duncan Sheik – all artists in the same musical vein as Jesci. This doesn’t mean Jesci, who is 33 years old and hails from the Dallas/Fort Worth area, has nothing new to offer the world: his songs are filled with rich sounds that will ring both new and familiar. Vintage Soul is full of sonic drum beats, melodic vocals and hearty guitar riffs. Subtle infusions of synth rhythms and beats round out Jesci’s sound, making the experience a rich and luscious one without being overbearing. Highlights of the EP include the infectious chorus and melody of “You Should Know” and the beautiful and forlorn vocals on "Lilywhite." "When You Fall" is instantly pleasing and only gets better with each listen, proving that Vintage Soul is a true experience. While all tracks have the potential to be mainstream favorites, the EP is balanced out with songs bearing less pop. "Stone," for example, is sure to please the more extreme music fan, but has the potential to grow on even the most passive music listener. Whether your mood is to rock out, chill, or brood about loves past, Vintage Soul will fit the bill. It’s a strong first release that encompasses everything we love about pop-rock these days and adds a little something special to the mix: a nice reminder that music is getting good again.
